Youth in Agroecology Policy Initiative

Who?

The coalition on youths initiatives in the policy process was comprised of eighteen (18) stakeholders. These included; PELUM Kenya, Organic Agriculture Kenya (OAK), Sustainable Agriculture Community Development Programme (SACDEP), East Africa Farmers Federation (EAFF), Africa Agribusiness Academy(AAA), Biovision Africa Trust, World Vegetable centre, FAO, SNV, Prodried Limited, Gracious Organics, Aqua hub Kenya, , Insectary, Youth Agri-tech, Institute for Culture and Ecology, Dudu master and the county government of Kiambu.

Why?

The ambition was to have a ‘Youth in Agroecology Policy Initiative’ to strengthen the partners’ efforts towards more effective representation and participation of youth in agroecology policy making and food systems transformation.

What?

The working group in Kenya, like other coalitions, engaged in a number of activities that included workshops, topical deep dives, national summits and annual meetups. The workshops were organised to develop shared objectives and common agendas, exchange learnings and best practices between regions, carry out lobby and advocacy training for youth, and engage new partners.

Achievements

More active youth participation in policy processes in different countries

Thirty-one young agroecology entrepreneurs built their capacities to effectively influence food systems policies.

WHAT NEXT?

Provide technical support to youth participate in policy discussions

Establish quarterly networking sessions and engaging new partners

Work with schools and technical and vocational education and training to engage youth in agroecology
