Agroecology in Research and Education Working Group

Who?

Twelve stakeholders that included: University of Rwanda-College of Agriculture and Veterinary medicine, Institut Catholique de Kabgayi,Agri-Research, Africa Leadership University, Research Centre for Integrated Development, International Food Policy Research Institute, Rwanda Environmental Management Authority,Rwanda Agricultural Board, Rwanda Environmental Management Authority, The National Industrial Research and Development Agency, IITA Rwanda, Rwanda Climate change Development Network,Sustainable Agriculture and Livestock Initiative (SALI), GreenCare Rwanda and Huguka Radio.

Why?

This working group brought together key stakeholders to \increase the attention given to agroecology in research and the inclusion of agroecology in Rwanda's agricultural education curriculum.

What?

First National Agroecology Actors’ Symposium, that brought together the relevant stakeholders in the ministries of Agriculture and Education who could further take action Exchange visits between different universities and research institutes to learn about including agroecology in research and education Desk review and needs assessment, ToR Workshops, topical deep dives, national summits and annual meetups.

Achievements

A steering committee that has already engaged key institutions towards mainstreaming agroecology in their work plans and the curriculum

A Policy brief highlights the status of research and agroecology in the country.

The working group is conducting a desk review and a needs-assessment on the status of agroecology and research in Rwanda, to inform policy makers and other stakeholders
