In its three years of existence, the YALTA programme has allowed participants to identify the main challenges in the future, and the solutions and activities that would be required to overcome them. A number of pre-selected stakeholders, including entrepreneurs, civil society organisations, knowledge institutes and investment experts, gathered during the programme’s Regional Summit in Kampala, Uganda, to discuss the challenges and the way forward.

Participants--including entrepreneurs, civil society organisations, knowledge institutes and investment experts--discussed various challenges that young people in agroecology currently face or challenges that bar youth from starting an agroecological business. These included marketing of agroecological products, the need for a conducive policy environment and framework, measuring impact of agroecological businesses, a lack of knowledge, access to finance and improved inclusion.

From this discussion, three objectives were identified;

  • Improving market access for argoecological business and products
  • Enhancing knowledge on agroecology (both in educational curriculums as well as among entrepreneurs and other stakeholders)
  • Increasing funding of and investment in agroecological businesses.

The different types of organisations convened will work on these objectives together through:

  • Increasing consumer awareness
  • Providing coaching, mentorship and business development services to young agripreneurs
  • Raising awareness about agroecology among donors
  • Developing tools for measuring the impact of agroecological approaches and businesses
  • Establishing mechanisms for access to financial tools for young agripreneurs
  • Embedding agroecology in educational curriculums.

We will be shaping these efforts in the near future, translating them into an actionable agenda, together with partners both existing and new, that can help us realize these ambitions. If you or your organisation are interested in contributing to the success of these joint ambitions, get in touch to see how you can become part of the initiative.
